3-on-3 Basketball Game
By: Ryan Hiken
On Mar. 22 the African American Organization will be hosting the annual three on three basketball tournament.
The tournament will be held in the gymnasium right after school and will feature a disc jockey from the radio station 92 Q. The tournament is eight dollars a player to enter and teams may have up to four people. The fee will pay for an event t-shirt, Gatorade and the trophy. The gym will be open for all spectators and everyone is welcomed to come and watch.
This year teachers are allowed to participate in the event. The event is also coed as both males and females may participate in the event. You must attend OMHS in order to play in the event and must display good behavior.
There are some new rules in place for this year’s event. This year participants are playing street ball style and touch fouls will not be called. There will be a referee and his/her word is final. If you argue against it then they will be disqualified. If one curses s/he is out of the tournament and if a player fights s/he is removed from the tournament. Players are not permitted to hang out around the Disc Jockey both while waiting to play their next game because if they break any equipment they will be paying for it.
This event is always a fan favorite here at OMHS and everyone comes out to enjoy the great game of basketball. First place this year will take home a trophy. But who will be the one to take it home?
Seniors Derek N and Brandon S are forming a team for the tournament. “I’m excited to get out there and show off my skills to all of the ladies” said Brandon. “Me and Bsi (Brandon’s nickname) got this one. We are going all the way!” said Nusbaum.
Mock Trial
By: Denee D.
Owings Mills High School’s mock trial team, led by Chris and Patricia Lambert, has made the school proud once again. This talented group of students made it to the County Finals, which they won in 2005 to become County Champions.
During each mock trial season one case is given to the entire State. This 06-07 year schools recieved a criminal case, internet stalking on a college campus, and like every case assigned there are moral principles to be learned.
“You have to be careful with how much personal information you give out, because someone can take it and commit a crime to harm you,” stated senior Shea B
Each school must face opposing teams either Prosecution or Defense; depending on the outcome, victorious team must then switch sides in order compete with another school.
“I like the prosecution because you are accusing people, instead of being the victim in the Defense,” admitted mock trial member Heather G
OMHS will be the defense against Mount De Sales High School after defeating all girls Notre Dame Preparatory, who defeated them last year.
“It felt great, they were the team that defeated us last year and it felt really good to beat them and enter the third Judicial Circuit championship match,” exclaimed Shea
To compete, all 12 participating members– three attorneys and three witnesses on each side– must be well researched and knowledgeable about the case. “We have to know the cases very well, as both lawyers and witnesses,” stated Heather
Regardless of winning or losing, most members have strong opinions of the club.
“It is the most amazing club in Owings Mills; nothing ever comes close,” expressed Mock Trial co-captain Elliot T
“Mock trial helps young people who are contemplating careers in law. It builds relationships with established sitting judge, and practicing attorneys,” stated Senior Allison H.
Spring Break Plans
By: Hilary R.
From April 6 until April 16 Baltimore County students will take a break from their stressful classes in order to partake in activities of their choice. Owings Mills High School students plan to spend their Spring Break in various ways.
A group of thirty-five juniors and seniors accompanied by teacher Patti Butler and guidance counselor Deborah Brannock will travel to Denmark for a culturally enriching experience. This group departs on April 5 and returns on April 16, causing them to miss one day of school. In Denmark, the students will spend the first portion of the trip in the capital Copenhagen, staying in a five star hotel and exploring the city. The remainder of the trip will be spent with a Danish student in his/her home.
“I am so excited for Denmark! The trip will be an experience of a lifetime. I had a great time hosting the Danes when they came here and cannot wait to see them all again,” exclaimed senior Carly B.
“Denmark is going to be awesome. I can’t imagine a better way to spend my Spring Break,” expressed senior Zack A
.
Other OMHS students are also traveling over spring break, but with their families instead. Junior Stephanie S will go to Cancun with her mom, dad and sister. “Cancun should be a lot of fun. I love hanging out in the warm weather and getting tan. It will be nice to get away from the constantly changing temperatures of Baltimore,” stated Slovon.
Senior Drew L is going to Florida with friends and family. “My family is going to Florida with the Soffers. A few of my friends are going to Florida as well, so we will all meet up and hang out. I am going to spend time on the beach and sleep. It will be nice to take a break from all of my AP classes,” explained Levy.
Spring break also gives students a great opportunity to visit colleges. Seniors can visit the colleges they have been accepted to, while juniors can visit colleges to help them make decisions as to where to apply. Junior Jennifer S plans to visit Duke University among other universities during the break. “My mom went to Duke and she has an alumni event over spring break. I am going to go to North Carolina with her to visit Duke and other colleges in the area like University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill,” elaborated Smith.
Other OMHS students will spend the break at home, just enjoying the free time. “I’m not going anywhere over spring break, but its fine. I will just hangout with friends, go to the mall and relax. Anything is better then being in school for an additional week,” expressed sophomore Jenny Narod.
Freshman Carlee S similarly stated, “I will spend spring break in Owings Mills relaxing. My family usually does not go away this time of year, but we may take a few day trips.”
