WHAT DO SCHOOL COUNSELORS DO?

Professional school counselors, formerly referred to as "guidance counselors", provide a wide range of services in the schools, based on individual student needs and student interests.  The Owings Mills High School Counseling Program is an integral part of the total educational experience through which students prepare for meaningful and rewarding lives as productive members of a changing society. At all times throughout the year counselors are seeing students in all grade levels with academic as well as social and emotional issues. There are crisis situations which are confidential that often take a large part of our day and are priorities. Student Service teams and 504s, meetings, conferring with teachers, parents, the nurses and administrators as well as phone calls and e-mails take time and are all necessary to do the job right. We are often the first person that students, parents, teachers, etc., come to with a question or concern. We strive for personalization for your children. We are passionate about what we do and work hard because we want to do the very best we can for your child at all times. As professionals, that is our goal and our promise to you.

Counseling Services focus on three main aspects of development:

Services designed to meet these goals include:

  • Classroom Presentations
  • Individual Planning
  • Group Counseling
  • Teacher and Parent Consultation

COUNSELOR/STUDENT ASSIGNMENTS
Students will be assigned to a counselor using an alphabetical system upon entering the ninth grade. They will be assigned to the same counselor for their four years of high school. Students may initiate a conference with their counselor by guidance appointment request form located in the Guidance Office. Appointments are scheduled within 72 hours of receiving the request. Emergency circumstances will be seen immediately.  Counselors are available to students for personal, academic and post high school counseling.
